A 100-year old former horse and mule barn in Texas is getting a 21st century makeover: The Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame will soon rely on a solar panel system to power its operations.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the Hall of Fame building was recently outfitted with 72 solar panels on its rooftop. According to the historical site's directors, the solar panel system will help power the building's cash registers, flat-screen televisions, ceiling fans and soda machines, among other operations.
Jami Hoffman, the site's executive director, said she pushed for the museum to go green for the cost savings and the positive environmental impact. She affirmed that the museum's history is steeped in energy efficiency. "You don't get much greener than a horse pulling a wagon," she said jokingly.
The costs associated with the solar panel system's installation were offset by a $50,000 nonprofit grant from Green Mountain Energy; moreover, Oncor Electric Delivery nearly matched that figure in its donation to the organization. State representatives gathered at the Hall of Fame site this week to commemorate the photovoltaic array's installation. Hoffman asserted "the weather was perfect." She said she "just kept praying, don't let it rain, don't let it rain!"
The solar panel system
will generate nearly 25,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, resulting in cost savings of nearly $20,000 each year.
