Electric utilities in Hawaii are being recognized for their solar capacities,
according to Mauinow.com.
The Hawaiian Electric Company captured third place for national utilities regarding how much solar power per customer was gained in 2010,
according to the 2010 Solar Electric Power Association. The competition ranked 230 electric utilities.
"This recognition of Hawaii's continued progress in adding solar power to our grids is really an honor shared with Hawaii's solar industry," Robbie Alm, Hawaiian Electric executive vice president, said in prepared remarks. "As a utility, we continue to help customers take advantage of solar electricity through net energy metering, the feed-in tariff and standard interconnections."
The utility also praised solar efforts that were smaller, such as the use of solar water heaters.
Maui Electric Company took fifth place, which it shares with Hawaii Electric Light Company.
The list's top utility for watts and customer rankings is Silicon Valley Power of California. Placing second is the Public Service Electric & Gas of New Jersey. Fourth is Xcel Energy of Colorado and fifth is Pacific Gas & Electric of California.
