NTT DoCoMo, a Japanese company, will release portable solar power systems that will cost about $1,300, according to Reuters. The news source said the system will feature a small solar panel and a storage battery. The unit could be released as early as next year.
The small system will deliver about 1 kilowatt of power and is intended for use as an emergency power supply, the news source said. It can be used to power computers, lights, electronics and more.
The system will be developed by electrical machinery makers inside and outside of Japan, according to Reuters. DoCoMo, a cellular phone provider, is looking to sell the system at 2,400 stores across the country. It is unknown where or when the company plans to sell the solar generators in the United States.
PC World reported a group of students at the University of Michigan recently invented Emerald, a portable solar panel device that can provide 100 lumens of light and power for electronic devices. The students have founded their own start-up company and could begin selling the devices.
