The government of Zimbabwe is looking to adopt solar powered tablet technology to help reduce the digital divide between rural and urban areas of the country.
Zimbabwe's Education, Sport, Arts and Culture Minister David Coltart said he met with Apple officials in Paris to talk about a new program to take solar powered iPads to rural areas. He said this is an effort to bring computerized teaching aids to schools in need and statedthey are hoping to get the pilot program running by next year.
“I am very excited that Zimbabwe is collaborating with Apple in this groundbreaking use of technology to advance education in the most remote schools," Coltart said. "If we can get it to work in Zimbabwe I am sure it will spread to poor schools throughout Africa - and beyond.”
Coltart updated his comments by saying that there is no agreement with Apple to use iPads, but Zimbabwe and the tech company are in discussions to bring the solar powered teaching device to schools in the country.
