United Solar recently announced that Baker Renewable Energy completed the installation of a 2.6-megawatt system, which consists of photovoltaic laminates on the roof of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner jet assembly plant in North Charleston, South Carolina.
"UNI-SOLAR PV laminates are engineered to be building-integrated, ultra-lightweight and non-reflective making them ideally suited for large buildings around airports where low-profile, lightweight and low-glare solar solutions are needed," said Julian Hawkins, president and CEO of ECD, parent company of United Solar.
The photovoltaic laminates installed on the rooftop of the plant is one of the largest solar installations in the United States, which will provide enough solar energy to supply power to 870 homes per year while also generating more than 3,950 megawatt-hours of energy annually.
According to The Associated Press, another solar energy generating facility is on the way in South Carolina.
The AP said Global Energy Franchise is opening a solar power plant in Cherokee County. Construction on the plant is expected to begin in spring, and it will initially employ 81 people, eventually expanding to more than 200 employees.
