NFL taking advantage of the benefits of solar energy

Posted: 2011-12-19

NRG Energy recently announced an agreement with the New Meadowlands Stadium Company for the energy company to design, install and operate solar panels atop the football stadium, which will power the LED lighting a display system at the facility.

"Our goal is to provide our fans with the best possible game-watching experience, one that is exciting, enjoyable and environmentally conscious," said Woody Johnson, CEO of the New York Jets. "Our partnership with NRG illustrates our commitment to this cause as we continue to explore eco-friendly initiatives to make MetLife Stadium the best in the world."

The solar panels will be on the stadium's Solar Ring, which changes colors depending on whether the New York Jets or the New York Giants are playing on any particular day. NRG will install 1,500 panels that will create 52 modules, which will have the potential to generate nearly 25 times the amount of electricity needed to power the stadium's integrated LED lighting and display system.

David Crane, CEO of NRG Energy, told Sustainable Business Forum that he doesn't believe his company is done working with the NFL. He said he plans to deliver solar energy to Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots in the near future.
